This is Ogulnabat, your multicultural coordinator. Today, I’d like to share with you an event which was organized at the Tsukuba International Association.
The “Japanese Culture Experience” event took place in Corridoio on September 8th, where participating foreign citizens of Tsukuba had the opporunity to immerse themselves in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, performed by the Ikkiku no kai group, and learn to play the Japanese music instrument known
“koto”, under the guidance of Suzuki sensei and her students.
The tea ceremony began with a demonstration of “Ryurei”, a unique form of the Japanese tea ceremony that uses tables and chairs. Seasonal Japanese sweets were served, enhancing the authenticity of the experience. The hosts from Ikkiku no Kai explained the ceremony’s manners and their meanings in detail, allowing participants to try making tea themselves using the authentic utensils provided.
Afterwards, participants moved to the music room, where the elegant music instrument “koto” were displayed. Suzuki sensei gave a brief speech about the history of the koto and performed “Sakura Sakura”, one of Japan’s most famous songs. As she played, a calming and reflective atmosphere filled the room. Participants were then invited to learn the basics of playing the koto and practiced recreating the song’s graceful melody under Suzuki-sensei’s expert guidance.
At the end of the event, participants asked questions and shared their opinions about the performances.
